As the first sugarbeet cooperative established in the United States, Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative has been Sweetening Life in the Valley since 1974. Headquartered in Wahpeton, North Dakota, they process more than 105,000 acres of sugarbeets each year on behalf of 430 shareholders and growers. With a 1,200-acre facility and a team of more than 400 year-round employees, Minn-Dak plays a vital role in the domestic sweetener industry.
Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative (MDFC) is a grower-owned cooperative headquartered in Wahpeton, North Dakota, in the heart of the Red River Valley. Established in 1972, Minn-Dak was the first sugarbeet cooperative in the United States and has been Sweetening Life in the Valley since producing its first crop in 1974.
Today, Minn-Dak’s shareholders and growers cultivate more than 105,000 acres of sugarbeets each year. Those beets are processed at the cooperative’s 1,200-acre facility, which employs about 430 year-round staff along with additional seasonal and harvest employees. As part of the domestic sweetener industry, Minn-Dak plays a vital role in supplying sugar across the country.
Their cooperative model and deep agricultural roots fuel a culture of collaboration, resilience, and long-term thinking. By investing in modern practices and honoring decades of tradition, Minn-Dak has built a reputation as a trusted partner for its growers, shareholders, and community alike.
But with legacy technology nearing obsolescence, Minn-Dak needed to modernize its digital systems to continue empowering growers and supporting the cooperative’s next 50 years of success.
Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative relied on outdated, disconnected tools—a grower information system and a harvest data app—that slowed down operations, required manual workarounds, and put critical grower and harvest data at risk. These inefficiencies impacted staff and shareholder growers, leading the cooperative to a turning point.
“It didn’t make sense to simply upgrade our old technology. Starting fresh was the right call: we needed something clean, intuitive for both growers and our team, and it has truly paid off,” said John Wieser, IT Director at Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative
John Wieser, IT Director at Minn-Dak, discusses their decision to start fresh with Onsharp
Minn-Dak set out to find a development partner who not only understood technology but also understood agriculture and cooperative culture. They needed a team with a proven track record, strong communication skills, and Midwest values that matched their own.
Onsharp partnered with Minn-Dak to design and develop a unified grower portal. The platform streamlined critical functions into one secure hub, allowing growers to:
Enter field and agronomic data with ease
Access real-time harvest updates
Review over 20 years of historical data
Growers can easily enter and manage critical crop information.
Instant access to harvest data keeps everyone aligned and informed.
Over 20 years of records available in one secure location.
Replaced outdated, siloed systems with one simple, centralized portal.
The new grower portal transformed Minn-Dak’s operations, boosting efficiency, reducing manual data entry, and empowering staff and growers to make better, faster decisions. The project not only met expectations but exceeded them. Finishing ahead of schedule and under budget.
“We are just extremely happy with your team and how they picked up the ball and ran. They did exactly what we needed and got it done with plenty of time. We tested it, felt confident from day one, and it worked seamlessly,” John said.
Beyond operational success, the project also set the stage for future enhancements and integrations, laying a strong foundation for continued growth. Most importantly, the process built a genuine partnership.
“The project was actually fun. I mean, we actually had fun working on this project,” John added.
Streamlined processes saved time and simplified day-to-day operations.
Disconnected systems were replaced with one central hub for real-time data.
Smarter, faster decisions backed by accurate, accessible information.
