At Onsharp, we get excited when people use social media to contribute to conversations. We love seeing little moments being shared that give people a clear and meaningful understanding of what an organization or experience is all about.
This week’s #HighFiveFriday goes out to DECA Inc. for their execution of the Social Media Correspondent Program. DECA is an organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Their members (currently over 225,000) are social media savvy. They love to talk about where they are, what they’re doing and who they’re with. DECA knew if they could leverage their engaging educational programs with their community of members who love to share, they could achieve massive reach. And that’s exactly what they did.
We love DECA’s Social Media Correspondent Program because:
- It integrates their efforts with conferences-Â As social media correspondents, members have the chance to apply to be on a special conference social media team. These teams are given specific assignments and behind-the-scenes access to different aspects of the conference. By having designated social media stations, live tweet screens and photo booth stations at the conference, attendees are encouraged to engage.

- It reaches a massive audience–Â When sharing information from one account (ex:Â @DECAInc.), DECA could only extend their reach so far. But by using their correspondents’ existing networks to share a message, they have the opportunity to reach audiences that have never heard their message.
To know that I'm in a room filled with 18,000 passionate DECA members from all over the world is overwhelmingly incredible. #DECAICDC

- It helps tell the story in an authentic way– Many aspects of DECA involve personal development and growth. This naturally creates many unique stories, which are more powerful when shared from personal accounts rather than the organization’s accounts.
- It creates an abundance of content to repurpose– With so many unique stories, ideas, and advice, the program gives correspondents an outlet to share content through blogs, tweets, videos, and more. This content can later be repurposed, too.

- It makes people feel involved– This program gives students an outlet to share their passion, have additional involvement and get resume builders. Plus, DECA gets to extend the reach of their message, gather unheard stories, and connect to organizational members in a deeper way.
